We. Have. Arrived.
What began as frustration with architectural waste evolved into a mission of creative transformation. In firms across the city, I watched beautiful stone samples—from Vermont slate to Italian marble—being casually discarded. These fragments of geological treasure, deemed too heavy to return, were destined for dumpsters.
In early 2024, I carved out a tiny space at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and began experimenting. The challenge: create terrazzo without toxic resins, chemical dyes, or plastic sealants. With no guidebook to follow, I built custom machines, developed natural pigment techniques, and tested countless approaches until I found a way to honor these discarded materials.
Today, each Osprey Studio piece tells a story of rescue and reimagination. These aren't just serving platters—they're conversations, gatherings, and commitments to a more conscious approach to design. Every piece represents our promise to challenge conventions, rescue forgotten materials, and bring sustainability to life through beautiful, functional art.
Meet Matthew.
As a practicing architect, I found myself drowning in large-scale projects—overwhelmed by chaotic clients and depleted creative energy. In 2023, something shifted. I realized I missed the pure joy of making things with my own hands, of being playful, of designing for myself.
The name "Osprey Studio" comes from my earliest memories on Long Island beaches, watching ospreys fish along the shore. Those moments instilled a profound respect for nature that has guided my creative journey ever since. Like those graceful birds, this studio adapts and explores, remaining true to its ecological roots.
